Islay provides a diverse range of interests and has much to offer which can be experienced by all…..from its wonderful scenery and wildlife to its golden sandy beaches. Visitors also have access to cycle hire (Port Ellen) pony trekking (Port Ellen) Salmon, Sea Trout & Brown Trout Fishing (available on Laggan Estate), swimming pool (Bowmore) and an 18 hole links golf course (Machrie). The Historical importance of Islay goes back to Neolithic times with archaeological and historical sites at Kildalton and Finlaggan…..and in more recent times the plague village of Solum where ledgend has it the plague was brought to the village by an infected mother of pearl necklace… food was left outside the village until it was no longer collected…then the village was burned to the ground.
Restaurants on the island offer a variety of cuisine from local seafood to Indian…..and with 8 distilleries on the island there is ample opportunity to sample some ‘uisge beatha’
